Nula, dancing around the pages

I must admit, I have been trying for a while to do a pansy pattern that does not look too much like a pansy. In the process I came up with other flowers, and with perfect copies of pansies.

Then a mix between a petunia and a campanula (Italian names, sorry) came out.

This is the first well organised tangle I put it in. I have been looking for a tangle to put by the side of Condor for a while among existing patterns, but then I figured one out on my own! :)

It looks a bit like Beach Buck, but I like it better.

Den Long - a Vietnamese Lantern

Have you ever been to Berlin for the Whit long weekend?

You could easily end up around the Carnival of the World Cultures. Different kind of music and food and parades all around.

A feast of colors, of people, of happiness.

This year it was the first time I saw it with Zentangle eyes. I see patterns everywhere,

On the last day I was checking the stands, to eat and drink new stuff, and maybe buy some clothes.

And right there I was struck by the colors of the lanterns at a Vietnamese stand.

After having walked some kilometres to check each and every stand around, I stopped and started drawing. I just saw some patterns in the tanglepatterns mailing list, and started to draw also a tree-of-life-like pendant and the lanterns.

The lanterns decorating the stand. Arent they cute?
Two of them made it to my messy place. One of the best souvenirs I ever bought.

Here Den Long did not come out so nice, but mixing it with Printemps in a doodle way helped somehow.
Den Long, Printemps. 10 June 2025

Probably time for the deconstruction, right?
This is the first version. The last example is far from optimal, but this is why I understood that I have to do another version. The first deconstruction is a study, then after some time I can do better.
Den Long, 10-11 June 2025

And then a more refined version, with less text.

And a missing part of the deconstruction, that makes it easier to do the ribbon.

Saltz

I think this is the first pattern I came up with.
I had some empty space, and Iwas not so happy with the way I drew Pepper. I am too shy with shading with the pencil, and in the beginning I never even tried.
It reminds Pepper, but not in a ring shape, rather a line. But the line can be as irregular as you want!
You draw two dashed lines and then decide how to connect the dashes of one line to the ones of the other. If you need some more dashes, you just draw them.

I also drew Ayame so bad here to the point that it is not recognizable, but it was less than 2 weeks that I was tangling... I recognized the pattern only by checking my YouTube history. This video from Emiko Kaneko would be a better reference!

Pepper, Saltz, Bugz, Ayame, Mooka. 5 June 2025

This is the first deconstruction I came up with.
I was suggested to give examples with zentangle tile format and to avoid text in images.
Notice that I use the defnition string, when I should have used ribbon.
I have not studied all Zentangle terminology yet, shame on me!
Saltz Deconstruction. 9 June 2025

And then I came up with another format for new patterns.
Two tiles for the deconstruction and some variations. I keep it also separated, so it is easy to link if this pattern gets published somewhere.

Saltz Deconstruction. 17 July 2025

But I really like the whole page format with some examples.
Saltz, Eddyper, Akwa, Aleuba. 17 July 2025

This pattern inspired me so many variations that I ended up drawing two pages.
Saltz, Jetties, Crescent Moon, Tupuk, Paradox, Lenche. 17 July 2025

I have not used this pattern as often as I should have had, because I am still in the beginning and am also always looking for new patterns to draw and so often end up trapped with deconstructing some patterns that flow, inspired by the real world, by another pattern or by something that comes out from my pen on its own.
I love exploring new forms. Finding easy ways to draw things that can look complicated but are not.

EDIT: I forgot these tea bags! I just found them while looking for the ones for the next post, Den Long.

Jewels, Flowers, Chocolate, Fireworks and Hearts. Is It a Romance?

Today I did this tangle. I found the steps on Pinterest, but it had no name. I like it, but I could do it better. It will come useuful when I have a lot of white space in a page. It is also easy to "draw big", while many tangle patterns come easy only in small size.
Pinterest has so much nice stuff, I have to be careful not to get trapped there for hours!

21 July 2025

I usually do not fall for heart tangles, but I had fun filling these hearts in a lot of different ways. And I love Eddyper. It is so elegant, easy, it grows in the page, you can manage it easily...
Indi-a, Eddyper. 30 June 2025
I think that once I asked chatgpt all tangles that reminded diamonds and other jewels. None of tthe ones here was suggested. Another proof that chatgpt is still not the best tool with Zentangle, unless you want some random names to practice.

Walu is very nice. I could do it better, like many other patterns, but I see a big potential there. And I found it so funny to draw Seven Flower as a bowtie!

Here I was trying to explain to my mother how to do a tangle, with some of the tangle patterns I feel more comfortable with. Maybe they were not the easiest one for a start.

I was not fully satisfied with how I drew Casinea, but it's ok.
I will probably dray it again, it can be so nice!
As for Cack, I worked on some variations. Not all them worked so nice, but this is how you find variations that click with you. You try. :)

Lots of patterns

Here I started with Sorry. There are some nice tutorials on Youtube, but I think it still comes complicated for me. Then I looked for some random stuff to fill the rest of the page.

Sorry, Barbed Twist, Zailz, Paradox. 5 July 2025

Something is crazy about finery. When I did not double lines it seemed so useless, and I loved it with a bit more of depth. As for Vigne, I did not like my way of drawing it following the exact steps, but I like my variation with very solid black petal dividers.
Finery, Vigne, Youdoo, Elirob. 7 July 2025

Here I started with Kozy. I am not happy with the result, I could not understand what is my way to draw it. I also tried Showgirl here and Twilight in other tangles, but all of them don't come out very well of my pen.
Kozy, Showgirl, Lolo, Snircles, Stitch. 8 July 2025

I love Trelina but it was a while I was not drawing it, at least on the home sketchbook. I mixed it with another favorite, Yumemi, and a couple of tangles I trained in the tea bags. I must have already posted the tea bags!
Trelina, Cirli, Yumemi, Kadibra. 12 July 2025

Here there is Popri, the latest pattern on TanglePatterns.I like it so much! I had to try it out! I am still quite shy with shading, but at least I can use the pencil to add some contrast. I think I also need to buy some color pencils that can be shaded/blended. The ones I have are not exactly professional pencils. But I love them nonetheless, they were a nice present from a friend! :D
As for the second pattern, it is a variation of Bugz, but I am sure the same pattern goes under another name (or more) in TanglePatterns. I forgot to note it down, if I will stumble on it in my neverending searches for a tangle that inspires me in that exact moment I will add it here.
Popri, Bugz. 21 July 2025

Pippi! Did you love it? I always felt a bit Pippi myself. :)

My Pippi pencils

Soon I should be done posting at least old stuff from July. I draw too much! :D

Getting in the flow

In the beginning I was always finding a nice pattern, then putting it in a random part of the page. Then the same for another pattern and another one.

Slowly slowly I started to plan a bit more, to divide the areas , to use only 4 or 5 main patterns in my A5 sketchbook.

I still also did pages where I mainly trained patterns without any conscience of the space I was filling, or repeated a pattern until I found a way to make it that I liked (or until I gave up). But there were some pages with a sense. Finally.

Here I was mainly training Mazorini with this video from Tanglewerk CZT, and then tried to fill the gaps.

Mazorini, WhatTheWell, Orciolo, Zenith. 30 May 2025

This is the first tangle I indeed love love love that I did.
Would I have loved zentangle as I did without this tangle? Possibly, but each and every tangle was a small part of this unexplainable magic that happened. I mean, I always thought I could draw if I wanted, I know how to make nice lines but always lacked the practice to copy well the real world. And here comes zentangle, where you can decide your own proportions. Change them. Deform them. Fill elements. Or not. Freedom. And all with a simple white page and a black pen. With colors I tend to childish associations. Here it can't pop up.
Back to this tangle. After I filled the Sonnenband with some sweet Printemps, I knew I had something nice and was looking for something that would have made it a beautiful tangle, not for a random pattern to train.
Sonnenband, Printemps, Ibex, Aquafleur. 30 June 2025

Here I first trained Dark Busters and then decided to go for orb tangles.
Dark Busters is one of my favorite patterns, and when I feel a bit uninspired to look for some new ones, it often pops up. Or I see a space where it fits perfectly.
I do not remember if I asked chatgpt for some orb tangles.
In the beginning I was often asking things to chatgpt, to get some patterns to try. Chatgpt has not been trained a lot on zentangle, fortunately, and rarely identifies a pattern or give correct answers, at least for the moment. Sometimes I ask something random but it brings mostly frustration, it is better to use it to create Anki Cards to study Japanese. :D
Dark Busters, Cruffle, Buldiz, Borbz, Fescu. 30-31 May 2025

And here I discovered that I do not like to draw Pou-Yang. I think it is also worth mentioning this video for the filled Flux in the bottom. I like all patterns on this page except Pouyang. :D But maybe I have to understand it better, or to find my own interpretation, to draw it better! It happened to me with other patterns.

Ocean and more with TanglesandToons

I have been following several YouTube channels to find inspiration and to learn how to draw patterns, even if lately I rely strongly on the steps from tangle patterns.

Lately I found another one, that is quite interesting, TanglesandToons. The first thing I checked was the ocean project.

Here you can find the first video.

I liked the approach that was not pure zentangle and the easy approach to shading.

I did not make all elements together yet in the same drawing, so far I simply did a page with all tangles and one with the toons part. I will probably update the post later when I do the drawing.

Seashimmer, Phicops, Oysteroid, Zenemone, Coral Seeds, Rayz, Indy-Rella, Jelly Legs, Quabog. 13 July 2025
I also copied a couple of elements that David didn't explain in the ocean project, but that can be seen there.
13-16 July 2025
Since I loved the Ocean Project, I checked out some more videos.
There is one where he draws Arukas, in a way that inspired me.
I always found this pattern interesting, but I could not find a way to draw it that looked nice. I think I did better this time.

Arukas, Fescu. 15 July 2025
There is also one tea bag with Arukas... The Arukas one remind me some graphics of the 80s, like in Jem and the Holograms (if you ever saw the anime series). And I love the second, especially the variation of Dano that I did. I love to make variations of the tangles, use parts or them or modify them for other functions. And in this case I transformed a ribbon into an element to fill some middle sized areas.
Upper Left: Quabog, Rayz, Zenemone. Upper Centre, Dano, Dansolo, Bolly. Upper Right: Day-Zee.
Bottom Left: Arukas, Printemps. Bottom Center: Dark Busters. Bottom Right: Jelly Legs.
15 July 2025
And now, the last video from David that I checked out.
Another different view on Zentangle, I actually drew a tile more or less in the middle of the page, added some shading, and then added some more of the same elements in the rest of the page with a grey pen. I bought a set of grey pens unintentionally, but they can be useful every now and then.
